In Honour of Sir Paul Reeves

The death of Sir Paul is a great loss for Aotearoa New Zealand and his passing a cause of great sorrow.

Sir Paul was a a man of integrity and compassion and had the courage to speak truth to power in his varied roles including as Archbishop, Governor General, and Kamatua.

GE Free NZ acknowledges and honours his work to protect the public interest against unethical and unacceptable abuse of Genetic Engineering in this country.

As Chair of the Bio-Ethics Council Sir Paul was tasked with navigating complex and contentious issues and advising government on the best ways forward for New Zealand. It is sad that his contribution was not properly respected or recognised at that time

Sir Paul resigned from the Bio-Ethics Council, and the Council has been abolished by the government. At the time Sir Paul raised concerns about the need for ongoing societal input and control over the potentially extreme uses of genetic engineering and its commercialisation.

"Sir Paul's leadership, compassion and humanity have been an enormous asset to New Zealand and he will be sorely missed, " says Jon Carapiet on behalf of all at GE Free NZ in food and environment.

"Our thoughts are with his family, and we extend our deepest sympathies and aroha."
